Community Development Job Opening

The City of Maplewood, Missouri, population 8,046, a suburb of St. Louis, is accepting resumes for the position of Community Development Director.  

The position reports directly to the City Manager and manages and develops economic development initiatives. Duties include managing the City of Maplewood Special Business District (SBD), all city social media platforms, the city’s web page, the development and production of a city-wide newsletter, business attraction and retention, planning and organizing all City of Maplewood and SBD events, and continually developing new events and initiatives to make Maplewood a shopping, dining and entertainment destination and a great place to live.

All applicants are required to have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 7 years experience in the field of community development. The salary range is $85,000 to $115,000.  A full job description is listed below.

POSITION TITLE: Community Development Director

Summary


Performs a variety of supervisory, administrative and professional work in economic development, implementation of community development plans and programs.

Essential Job Functions:
+ Manage and develop economic development initiatives within the City of Maplewood.

+ Provide business assistance including business attraction and retention and working with business owners to set up new businesses through the City of Maplewood municipal process to public relations for opening.

+ Address ongoing public relations needs for all city departments, businesses, and initiatives.  This includes carving out a PR plan for business openings or promotion of businesses, events, departmental announcements, and crisis management.

+ Residential housing assistance to Maplewood residents including identifying resources for home repair and other housing matters and organizing resource seminars as needed.

+ Manage the City of Maplewood Special Business District Tax Advisory Commission (SBD) which includes creating monthly SBD agendas and meeting packets for commissioners, business recruitment, budget development, branding, advertising, event development planning and management.

+ Newsletter development and production. Manage the production of the city’s newsletter, The Maple Leaf, which includes editing and overseeing all aspects of production from content development, design, printing, and mailing. Produce and distribute the monthly employee newsletter.

+ Manage the City of Maplewood website including content development, email blasts, calendar posts and other notifications as needed.


+ Manage all aspects of the City of Maplewood’s and SBD’s social media platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Yelp.


+ Develop, plan and organize City of Maplewood and SBD events including Prost!, The Brokers Tour, Small Business Saturday, Sweet Tooth Tour, Coffee Crawl, Stringfest and Let Them Eat Art. 


+ Serve as a member of the Mid County Chamber’s Economic Development Committee, the Christmas Tree Walk committee and the Taste of Maplewood committee.


+ Continually develop new events and initiatives to make Maplewood a shopping, dining and entertainment destination and a great place to live.











 




Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:


Experience with economic and residential development including considerable knowledge of tax credits, development incentives and other urban development programs. Extensive knowledge of web page development and social media.  Must have excellent creative writing skills. Possess a thorough understanding of Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Publisher.  Ability to manage a diverse group of consulting professionals including artists, designers, architects, real estate brokers, contractors and printers. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with elected officials, members of the press, business owners and residents.
